Amateur Radio
I've been fascinated by radio and telecommunications since I was a child. I earned my Technician license in 2013 and have been exploring many different facets of the hobby ever since.
What I Enjoy
One of my favorite activities is scanning the shortwave bands in the evening to see what kinds of faraway broadcasts I can pick up. There's something magical about tuning into a station from the other side of the world using nothing but a radio and a piece of wire.
I also love utilizing software, along with an RTL-SDR, to see what kinds of digital broadcasts I can decode. Software-defined radio has opened up a whole world of experimentation that would have been prohibitively expensive with traditional hardware.
Looking Ahead
In the future, I'd love to set up a large shortwave antenna to get even better results, and perhaps finally make the plunge and purchase a nice fully-featured transceiver. In the meantime, I'm happy playing with the various radios I've acquired from hamfests and the online community.
